The Skills Canada Competition is a large annual event consisting of every trade and major skill you could think of in the employment industry . Competitors from all over in the secondary and post-secondary levels compete regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally in their specific field of skills. A competitor whom received gold or silver regionally then continues onto provincials. All provincial gold winners then form Team Alberta and move onto Nationals competing for their place in Team Canada. Worlds Skills (International) competes every second year.
The history of #TeamVleeming competing in Skills Canada goes back over 10 years ago before Carlo, president of Vleeming Construction, started his business. Like most competitors, Carlo started competing in Skills Canada on a secondary level and he started in grade 10. Carlo competed each year in the carpentry sector and for his first two years, did not place in the top 3. It is a tough competition with some very talented and skilled people competing.
2006, Carlo's third and final year competing on the secondary level, was the game changer. He now had two years of practice under his belt and he knew what to expect at the competition. He competed Provincially in carpentry and came out with Gold! He then proceeded Nationally, held in Halifax that year, and he came home with a bronze thus making him one of the top three carpenters in all of Canada for 2006!
It still feels like it was just yesterday when we were cheering Carlo on at Skills Canada and to this day, eleven years later, Carlo and the Vleeming Team highly encourage and support the Skills Canada Competition.
Dustin Sejdl has been part of the Vleeming team since 2013. He came to us prior to graduating high school and now is an apprentice carpenter at the Red Deer College. Dustin has a prestigious history competing in the Skills Canada Competition in the Cabinet Making Sector. Between 2012 and 2016, Dustin competed in 10 competitions (regionally up to nationally) and won 7 gold medals, 2 silvers and 1 bronze. He made top 3 in every competition and dominated with first place. This year, Dustin did not compete, but instead he was honoured as a judge for Regionals carpentry and provincials cabinet making.
Josiah Pilon has been part of the Vleeming team since 2012 and has also competed diligently in Skills Canada. From 2012 to 2014, Josiah has competed in 7 competitions (Regionally up to nationally) in the carpentry sector and won 3 golds and 4 silvers. Josiah has also made top 3 in each competition and dominated with second place. This year was Josiah's first year competing in the Post-Secondary level and he came home with a Silver bringing his silver count up to 5!
At Vleeming Construction, we fully support these boys and any staff members that have the opportunity to compete in Skills Canada. The competition provides a real-life experience for the younger generation that they may never have the opportunity to experience again. The skills put to the test in these competitions are everyday skills that are immensely judged and critiqued. The experience sets each competitor up for true success.
